Small But Mighty the John Dory A5 GyotakuLast year I bought a John Dory from my fishmonger and made some very successful prints from it. Possibly my most popular fish last year. I recently met a local marine biologist who said he might have some samples for me once they've served their purposes in the lab. When he messaged me to say he had a John Dory I was very excited. However I was not expecting this! With a body measuring approx 8cm by 6cm this John Dory is small but perfectly formed.

and the simplicity of the composition all contribute to a piece that is both modern and timeless

this work continues my exploration of traditional printing techniques reimagined through a modern lens

This bass is printed on Chinese mulberry paper measuring 69

) and glued using a ph neutral glue to the boards

So the second stage is to make the print nice and flat so it will sit well in a frame

A second sheet of paper is then applied to the back and pressed down

Print Size 40 x 40 cm approx

I've always loved printing feathers they make a very effective print and are popular amongst my clients

I've used my regular blue and gold acrylic ink

Here I have applied two backing sheets to the print and the three sheets are left to dry overnight

Did you know all flat fish start off with an eye on either side of their head and as they grow one eye migrates around as they start to settle on the floor of the ocean
