Urauchi known in english as Wet Mounting

It is used a lot by Gyotaku artists but I have always struggled with it so I was really pleased with this print and a couple of others I produced as I think I’ve finally got to grips with it

the triptych has been backed using the urauchi method

So I take a second sheet of paper and using a very ancient technique called wet mounting or Urauchi

This is on Chinese paper measuring approx 30x30cm and has been mounted using the authentic Japanese wet mounting technique which uses a simple flour and water paste and requires a period of around 24 hours to dry and stretch

Once the print was made

which has been 'flipped over' and printed from both sides

inviting close observation of their fine details

my intention is not to record the specimen accurately or to make a record of my catch

almost ethereal quality
