Hans Hessellund, Interior Scene With FamilyA fine 19th century interior scene by academy trained Danish artist, Hans Andreasen Hessellund (1851 1907). It depicts two women, presumably a mother and daughter, working at a table while a bearded man stands alongside them. The attention to detail here is exquisite and the light is beautifully observed. Note how Hessellund has drawn attention to the young ladys hands as she knits while reading a book. Her forefingers and thumbs are brightly lit,

Many of his works were exhibited at the illustrious Salon in Paris where he was awarded several medals

The painting is signed in the lower left and housed within a gilded frame that’s probably its original

There’s an area towards the top in which some darker paint has gathered but this is as the artist intended

This gives the painting an interesting unfinished quality and perhaps it was the work of an amateur learning their craft

The artwork itself is in fairly good condition given its age

Signed and dated in the upper right

This technique gives the scene depth and pulls us closer towards it
